20110327 Day trip to Johor (Part 2: Food)

The best thing to do in Johor (if you are not a shopping person like me) is to indulge in FOOD!!

1) The first thing we did is to have breakfast at Old Town White Coffee Cafe. Their decor is so authentic! Having slept an average of 5 hours for the past 3 nights, I needed my cup of 'wake up drink' badly.

2) Next, lunch at Asli Seafood Restaurant. This place was recommended by Chin's friend. It is actually in a kampung, about 40 minutes drive from City Square Shopping Centre. This place is very secluded yet business was brisk and we even spotted a few Singaporean cars.

Their service was so-so, depending on who is serving you. We unanimously agreed that the seafood was very fresh but the cooking was only average. There was also slight sewage smell in the air but it did not really bother us much. And all these food (fish, prawn, mussels, squids, greens and 5 cans of drinks) cost only RM95.50.

3) It was scorching hot!! What's a better way to end the trip? Ice-cream from Baskin Robbins!! Sweet ending to a long day!

We did not take the train back; took the SBS bus 170 instead. We paid only RM 1.40 and it took us from City Square, Johor to Kranji MRT Station. We chose to depart Johor at about 4pm, avoiding the rush hours. Overall, it was a pleasant train journey and a good trip with the chum chums. I can now proudly tell my friends that I have taken the train from Singapore to Johor Bahru.

20110327 Day trip to Johor (Part 1: KTM)

A week ago, I lamented to Ash and Chin that I have never taken a train from Singapore to Malaysia and the train station at Tanjong Pagar is closing down in a few months time! My initial plan was to take the train to Kuala Lumpur. Then Chin reminded me that the journey will take 7 hours. So I changed it to Johor Bahru instead. It only takes 1 hour to reach JB Sentral (excluding the time spent at immigration).

On Sunday, the 5 of us woke up very early to make it in time for the 8AM train. *YAWN* The tickets are only available for sale 24 hours before the train departs. We did not have to worry about long queues as 1) most of the passagers will prefer to take the coach than the train. 2) it is freaking early for a Sunday.

There are 5 train schedules daily, at 7.15am, 8am, 1pm and (I forgot the last two). Anyway, I read some reviews on the internet that the train schedules are subject to changes so it is advisable to call the office to check the timing. In our case, Ash went down personally last Thursday to get the timings for us. Except for the 7.15AM train which cost S$3 per ticket, the ticket price for the rest of the timings is S$13 each.

Snapshots of the train station.
The immigration process was slow.
I should have woken up earlier to have more time to take more photos!!

The journey was pleasant albiet a little noisy. The seats are old and dirty. We also saw little roaches around.

We did not know there is a Bukit Timah Station

City Square is just across JB Sentral

Unlike the usual chop in the passport, the officer stamped it on the white card

The other officer (departure) wrote this on my passport
