The machines only take coins and Maestro cards (not
Visa, MasterCard or American Express). If you do not have enough coins,
you have to buy the tickets at the ticket office where they will charge
additional transaction fee of EUR0.50 per ticket.

You can do it the Dutch way - biking!!
Or walk! Amsterdam is the most "walkable" city.
